Madonie map

On the map you see the 16 Madonie villages and the trailheads of the published hikes, on an OpenStreetMap topographic base. Tap a point to open its page: from a village you reach where to stay and eat, from a trail the drive to the start and the weather.

What is on the map?

Two kinds of points:

  • villages, with a link to the village page;
  • trailheads, with a link to the hike page.

We do not draw the routes. For those the reference is sentierisiciliani.it, linked from every trail page. In the column next to the map you find the list of trails with grade and approximate distance.

How do you read the Madonie from above?

The massif is a large block between two motorways. To the north the A20 runs along the sea at Cefalù; to the south-west the A19 climbs inland, with exits for Polizzi Generosa and the two Petralias.

In the middle are the high plains: Piano Zucchi, Piano Battaglia, Piano Sempria. Around them, the villages: Castelbuono and Isnello on the north side, Petralia Sottana, Petralia Soprana and Gangi to the south-east, along the SS120.

Where next?

To choose a hike, open the list of trails, which also has a map view with filters. For the villages there is the villages page, ordered by altitude. For roads, distances and winter rules, see the roads page; for mountain weather, the weather.

Frequently asked questions

How big is Madonie Park?
Madonie Park (Parco delle Madonie) covers 39,679 hectares, about 400 square kilometres, in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, between the sea at Cefalù and inland Sicily. It was established on 9 November 1989 and includes 15 municipalities. The park authority is based in Petralia Sottana.
Does the map show the routes of the trails?
It shows only the trailheads, so you know where to leave the car. Full tracks, with elevation gain and waymarks, are on sentierisiciliani.it: every trail page links to the right page. To walk, use a map or an app with the track downloaded, because up high there is often no signal.
Where is Piano Battaglia on the map?
In the middle of the massif, at about 1,600 metres, above Petralia Sottana: you get there on the SP54 from Petralia Sottana (about 18 km), from Polizzi Generosa (about 17 km) or from Isnello via Piano Zucchi (about 24 km). It is the start of the trail to Pizzo Carbonara.
Can I use the map offline?
The map loads from the internet, so it does not work without a connection. Before you leave, save the coordinates of the trailhead from the trail page, or open it with the navigation button while you still have signal.
