A short history

The name comes from the stream that crosses the territory. There are several theories: from the Aramaic hassin, cold river, from the Punic hassinor, a stream flowing in a tube-shaped bed, or from Greek. The astronomy park took its name from there: GAL Hassin, galaxy plus Hassin.

After the Arabs were driven out, Count Roger founded the new village. In 1131 Roger II, founding Cefalù Cathedral, included Isnello in the new diocese. The town then passed through several families: the Abbate, the Ventimiglia from 1377 to the end of the 14th century, the Santacolomba, who became counts in 1625, and finally the Termini.

On 14 April 1788 the people of Isnello bought back the county’s lands from the counts and freed themselves from baronial power. The centre keeps its Arab-origin layout: narrow lanes following the slope, four districts divided by two roughly cross-shaped streets.

In the 20th century Isnello made it into books and films: Carlo Levi wrote about it in Le parole sono pietre, and Pasquale Scimeca’s 2000 film Placido Rizzotto was largely shot here.

What to see in Isnello

The GAL Hassin astronomy park

It is why many people come to Isnello. The Centre for research, teaching and outreach in astronomy opened on 11 September 2016, just outside the town. The Madonie sky is so dark that in the 1970s Piano Battaglia was studied as a possible site for the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo.

The centre has four spaces: the planetarium, the museum with meteorites and the stories of the people who made astrophysics, the Parco dello Spazio e del Tempo with sundials and outdoor instruments, and the observation terrace with telescopes.

How visits work, according to the official website (2025/2026 season, checked on 19 October 2026):

Period Visit Time
October-February meteorite museum and planetarium starts 3.30 pm, about two hours
March-June solar observation from the terrace and planetarium starts 3.30 pm, about two hours
July-September standard visit with planetarium and museum about 5-7.15 pm
July-September evening sky observation about 9.30-11.45 pm

Booking is compulsory and tickets are bought online. Visits are in Italian. Bring a sweatshirt for the evening: even in August it is cool outdoors. Tips on dark skies, the best periods and observing are in the guide to stargazing in the Madonie.

The mother church of San Nicolò

It is dedicated to the patron saint and has the appearance it was given between the late 16th and early 17th century. The apse is decorated with stuccoes from 1607 by Giuseppe Li Volsi of Nicosia. Inside are an organ with a case from 1625, a marble tabernacle from 1484-1495, a wooden choir from 1601, the statue of San Nicolò from 1689 and a wooden crucifix by Li Volsi from 1619.

The other churches

  • Santa Maria Maggiore, overlooking the town, with its bell tower spire covered in coloured majolica and, inside, a 15th-century two-sided hanging cross.
  • San Michele Arcangelo, with frescoes from the 14th and early 15th century and a wooden crucifix from 1627.
  • Santissima Annunziata, with stuccoes by the Messina brothers, a Nativity by Giuseppe Salerno from 1620 and a marble Annunciation of the Gagini school.
  • Maria Santissima del Rosario, with a 15th-century altarpiece attributed to the Flemish painter Simone de Wobreck.

The castle and the gorge

The ruins of the Norman castle stand on a ridge above the town and are privately owned. Below, the Isnello stream squeezes into a narrow canyon between the castle hill and the cliff of Montagna Grotta Grande. You see both well from town.

The “Trame di filo” museum

Opened in 2009, it collects filet lace and embroidery, a craft with a long history in Isnello.
