Coast or inland?

The Madonie reach down to the sea, and that is where most hotels are: in Cefalù, between the beaches and the old town with its Norman cathedral.

Inland there are only a few hotels per village, often in country buildings. You find them in:

How do you choose?

Think about where you will spend your days. A base by the sea works for Cefalù, its Rocca and the villages on the north side, such as Castelbuono and Gratteri. For the inland villages and high-level hikes the distances grow: Piano Battaglia is about an hour of bends from Cefalù.

In winter the road matters too. On the inland main roads chain or winter tyre rules apply: you find them on the roads page, together with distances between villages.

Where is the best place to book a hotel for the Madonie?
If you alternate the sea and day trips, Cefalù: from there Castelbuono is about 23 km and 26 minutes away, Isnello about 21 km. If you come to walk or ski at Piano Battaglia, an inland hotel is better: from Petralia Sottana or Polizzi Generosa the plateau is 20 to 25 minutes' drive.
Is there a hotel at Piano Battaglia?
On the plateau the only place with rooms that we have confirmed as open is the Rifugio Giuliano Marini, with 18 rooms and 68 beds. The former hotel La Montanina appears to have been closed for more than 25 years. The nearest hotels are in the villages: Petralia Sottana, Polizzi Generosa and Isnello.
Do the coastal hotels stay open in winter?
Each hotel sets its own opening periods and we have no reliable general figure. Before booking a stay between November and March, check the hotel's website or phone.
