Madonie travel info
When to visit the Madonie: spring and autumn for hiking, cool summers full of festivals, winter for snow. What to do in the Madonie month by month.
You can visit the Madonie all year round, but each season has its own reason. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are the best months for hiking. Summer is the season of festivals and food fairs, with cool air in the hill towns. Winter brings snow to Piano Battaglia, though not every year and not all winter.
At a glance
This is the best season for walking at middle altitudes: full streams, green meadows, lengthening days. On the highest plateaus snow can linger well into spring, so for the peaks check the mountain forecast.
Spring brings Holy Week, with the rites of Cefalù and Petralia Sottana, the wild greens festival in Isnello in April, the Transumanza in Geraci Siculo and the European Geoparks Week in late May, with guided walks that are often free. Between late May and early June there is the Infiorata in Castelbuono: in 2026 from 30 May to 2 June.
The coast is hot; in the hill towns, such as Petralia Soprana (1,147 metres), Geraci Siculo (1,077), Gangi (1,011) or Polizzi Generosa (920), the evenings are cooler. It is the busiest time for festivals: almost every town has its patron saint’s feast or its food fair.
For hikes, set off at dawn and choose woodland trails, such as the Castelbuono woods. From 15 May the Sicilian Region’s fire prevention campaign is active: lighting fires is forbidden in the Park, and when the fire risk is high it is wiser to skip the woods. The rules are in our guide to safety in the Madonie.
Summer is also when manna is collected from the ash trees of Castelbuono and Pollina, in July and August: the story is in our article on Castelbuono manna.
For many people this is the best season. September reopens the hiking season, October brings the colours of the beech woods and mushrooms, November the last colours. Local guides place the foliage between October and the first half of November: the best spots are in our article on autumn in the Madonie beech woods.
Late October has two big events: the Funghi Fest in Castelbuono and the autumn Festa dei Sapori Madoniti in Petralia Sottana, in 2026 both from 23 to 25 October.
In autumn the Ente Parco also publishes “danger zone” notices for the days of wildlife control with firearms: check them before you set off.
In winter it can snow on the peaks, and when there is enough snow the lifts open at Piano Battaglia, the only ski area in the Madonie. It does not happen every year: in winter 2025-26 the lifts ran from 2 to 5 February and then from 29 March. As of 19 October 2026 there was no opening date for the 2026-27 season.
For snowshoeing, sledging and mountain huts see the Snow section and our article on Piano Battaglia in winter. On the main roads listed in the ANAS order you need chains on board or winter tyres during the winter period: the dates are on the roads page.
December is the month of nativity scenes: the living nativity in Gangi from 26 to 29 December, the Via dei presepi in Cefalù, Dolcemente Castelbuono over the 8 December holiday.
This table sums up what happens each month. Exact event dates are on the linked pages and in the events calendar.

In August and on the days of the major festivals: Sant’Anna in Castelbuono, the Sagra della Spiga in Gangi (in 2026 from 1 to 9 August), Ypsigrock in Castelbuono (in 2026 from 6 to 9 August), the living nativity in Gangi, the Funghi Fest. On those days book your accommodation early and arrive in town early.
On snowy weekends the road to Piano Battaglia fills up: the rules for getting there are in how to reach Piano Battaglia in winter.
The quietest months are January (if it does not snow), November and spring weekdays.
It depends on how much you want to see, not on the season. As a guide:
The distances between towns, useful for deciding where to stay, are in our guide on getting around the Madonie. In spring and autumn the days are shorter than in summer: for a long hike start early and keep an eye on sunset time.
To plan your trip read also how to get to the Madonie and our Madonie weekend. The festivals, one by one, are in our guide to festivals and traditions.
