The Madonie with children: a 3-day family itinerary
The Madonie with children in 3 days: the Rocca di Cefalù, the Gole di Tiberio, Castelbuono castle and the Parco Avventura. Short stages, distances and tips.
With children the Madonie work well in 3 days with short stages: the first in Cefalù, between the Rocca and the beach, the second between Castelbuono castle and the Gole di Tiberio, the third at the Parco Avventura Madonie, above Petralia Sottana. You’re never in the car for more than 45 minutes at a stretch between stops, apart from the drive from and back to Palermo. The walks are short, with little climbing.
At a glance
- Length: 3 days and 2 nights, in Cefalù and Castelbuono.
- Total distance: about 270 km from Palermo and back, calculated on OpenStreetMap.
- Longest drive: Castelbuono-Parco Avventura, 43 km and 45 minutes.
- Walks: the Rocca di Cefalù (grade T) and the Gole di Tiberio, about 2 km one way.
- Ages: from 4-5 years for the walks. At the Parco Avventura the baby courses are for children aged 3 to 8.
- Season: May to October. The Parco Avventura only opens on the days in its calendar.
Who is it for?
For families with children aged 4 to 12 who walk a bit but not for hours. For people who want to mix water, castles and woods without spending the holiday in the car.
With little ones in a baby carrier you can do almost everything. At the gorge, though, watch your step on the stones of the riverbed. For older kids who like walking there’s the weekend around Castelbuono, with the loop in the Piano Sempria woods.
When to go?
May to October. June and September are the easiest months: you can swim in Cefalù, there’s still water in the gorge and it’s not hot in the woods.
The Parco Avventura Madonie doesn’t open every day: on the days in its calendar you don’t need to book, on other days you do, for a minimum of 6 people. Check the calendar on the park’s website before fixing day 3.
In winter the plan changes: with snow, sledging at Piano Battaglia replaces the adventure park. Keep it to open slopes, never on the pistes. Everything you need to know is in the guide to sledging and snow with children.
Getting there and how much driving
From Palermo take the A19 towards Catania, then the A20 towards Messina to the Cefalù exit. Exits and roads are on our roads page.
The stages, calculated on 19 October 2026 with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, with no traffic or stops:
| Leg | Roads | km | Driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palermo → Cefalù | A19, A20 | 72 | 1 h 05 |
| Cefalù → Castelbuono | SS113, SS286 | 23 | 25 min |
| Castelbuono → Gole di Tiberio and back | SS286 | 22 | 40 min |
| Castelbuono → Parco Avventura Madonie | SS286, SS120, SP54 | 43 | 45 min |
| Parco Avventura → Palermo | SP54, SS120, A19 | 107 | 1 h 30 |
Mountain roads have lots of bends. If someone in the family gets carsick, stop halfway on the longer legs and don’t set off on an empty stomach.
Day 1: Cefalù, the Rocca and the sea
The Rocca di Cefalù is the headland behind the town. You climb from the Salita Saraceni, in the old town, on steps and a paved path between the walls. At the top are the Temple of Diana and the medieval cisterns, with views over the cathedral and the harbour. On our trail page it’s grade T, the easiest on the CAI scale.
Entry is paid and the path is in full sun: in summer, go as soon as it opens. Bring water and hats.
The afternoon is for the beach, next to the old town. If the kids still have energy, visit the Norman cathedral, part since 2015 of the UNESCO site Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale. The town page is Cefalù.
Day 2: Castelbuono and the Gole di Tiberio
Morning: the castle
In Castelbuono the Ventimiglia castle is the Museo Civico. In the Palatine Chapel, look with them at the Serpotta stucco commissioned in 1684: cherubs, drapery and fantastical creatures on a gold background.
According to the museum’s website, checked on 19 October 2026, children up to 7 get in free and those aged 8 to 18 pay the reduced rate. From April to October it opens daily 9.30 am-1 pm and 3-6.30 pm, from November to March 9.30 am-4.45 pm. The museum warns that hours may change: call ahead if you’re coming from far away.
Then walk around the centre and stop for a snack: the town’s pastry shops work with manna, collected from ash trees. The story is in our guide to Castelbuono manna.
Afternoon: the gorge
The Gole di Tiberio are a narrow canyon cut by the Pollina river, 20 minutes from Castelbuono. According to our trail page it’s one of the walks best suited to children: little climbing and the water always close by. It’s about 2 km one way, in half an hour, then you come back the same way.
Inside the gorge you can only go in the water. In summer authorised operators run trips upstream by raft or canoe: ask them from what age they take children.
Pack shoes that can get wet, a full change of clothes and sun cream. After heavy rain the river rises and access becomes dangerous: in that case skip the gorge.
Day 3: the Parco Avventura Madonie
The Parco Avventura Madonie is in Contrada Gorgonero, on the SP54 about 3 km above Petralia Sottana. From Castelbuono you get there in 45 minutes via the SS286, Geraci Siculo and the SS120.
Courses for children and teenagers and 2026 prices, from the official website checked on 19 October 2026. High season is Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June and the whole of August:
| Course | For | Length | Low season | High season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baby and Tree-top Castle | ages 3-8, no harness | 2 hours | €8 | €10 |
| Azzurro and Turchese | height 1.10-1.30 m | 1 hour 30 | €10 | €12 |
| Arancio, Giallo, Lime and Verde | height over 1.30 m | 2 hours | €15 | €17 |
On top of these there’s the compulsory entry ticket to the area: €2 for adults not resident in the park, free under 12. Inside there are tables and barbecues, where you can bring your own lunch, and a bar with pasta, sandwiches and ice cream. Tables and barbecues can’t be booked.
In the afternoon, if there’s time, drive 13 km up to Piano Battaglia, at about 1,600 metres, for a walk on the plateau. Then head home: from Petralia Sottana the SS120 leads to the A19 and Palermo in an hour and a half.
Where to stay and eat
We chose the nights for their position:
- Night 1, Cefalù: the beach is next to the old town. Places to stay in where to stay in Cefalù.
- Night 2, Castelbuono: 20 minutes from the gorge and on the way to the Parco Avventura. See where to stay in Castelbuono.
With children, a farm stay outside town is often handier for space and parking: on the “where to stay” pages, filter by type. For food, see where to eat in Cefalù and where to eat in Castelbuono.
If it rains
- Instead of the gorge: GAL Hassin in Isnello, the astronomy park, 12 km from Castelbuono. The standard visit lasts 2 hours 30 minutes, with planetarium and museum, and is booked on its website.
- Instead of the Parco Avventura: tree-top courses usually don’t run in the rain. Stay in Castelbuono for the castle, if you haven’t seen it, or head home early via Cefalù.
With a weather warning, check the regional Civil Protection bulletin and our roads page.
Practical tips
- Set off early and keep the afternoon free: with children, everything takes twice as long.
- It’s cooler in the mountains than by the sea: a sweatshirt for everyone even in August. Compare the Cefalù forecast with Petralia Sottana’s.
- For the walks: closed shoes, water and something to eat.
- For emergencies call 112.
