How do you use this list?

Pick the type of place, then the town. Listings are in alphabetical order.

Each listing shows its source (almost always OpenStreetMap), the address and, when available, phone, website and opening hours. We publish a place only when we have a verifiable source, and we check it again every week: if it disappears from the source, we verify and remove it.

We do not give ratings or publish reviews. We tell you where the trattorias are and what to order; the choice is yours.

Where do you eat best, village by village?

Each village has its own page with the places in that municipality:

What should you order?

It depends on the season. Mushrooms and chestnuts in autumn, pulse soups and grilled meat in winter, wild greens in spring. All year round, provola, ricotta and mountain cured meats.

The guide to Madonie food describes the products one by one. For manna there is the article on how it is harvested in Castelbuono.

And if you want to eat at a food festival?

The Madonie sagre are the most direct way to taste products where they come from, from the hazelnuts of Polizzi Generosa to the mushrooms of Castelbuono. Dates and editions are on the food festivals page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the typical food of the Madonie?
Mountain cooking: meat and cured meats, cheeses such as provola delle Madonie and ricotta, pulses such as the badda bean of Polizzi Generosa, mushrooms in autumn. Among the sweets, the testa di turco of Castelbuono and the sfoglio of Polizzi. Ash tree manna, harvested between Castelbuono and Pollina, goes into sweets and liqueurs.
Where can you eat at Piano Battaglia?
On the plateau there are the Ristoro Lo Scoiattolo, for a quick stop, and the Locanda Alte Madonie inside the Rifugio Giuliano Marini. The Rifugio Grifone, on the SP54 just before the plateau, is now mainly a place to eat. For a sit-down lunch, drive down to Polizzi Generosa or Petralia Sottana, 20 to 25 minutes away.
Can you have lunch at an agriturismo in the Madonie?
Many Madonie agriturismi serve meals made with their own produce, often only by booking and not every day. You find them among the places to stay, on the farm stays page, and here with the Agriturismo filter. Always call first: days and hours change with the season.
Are the opening hours up to date?
The hours we show come from OpenStreetMap, where volunteers add them, and we say so under each listing. Every listing has the date of the last check. In winter and on weekdays many mountain places close or open less, so phone before you set off.
Where can I buy Madonie food products?
In the village food shops and pastry shops: filter the list by food shop or pastry shop and by town. Food festivals are the other good occasion, because the producers are there: the calendar is on the Madonie food festivals page.
