A short history
The village grew below the Castrum Sancti Mauri, the castle at the top of the mountain, at about 1,100 metres. Its origins are old, perhaps Byzantine. In 1082 Count Roger placed it under the diocese of Troina; in 1196 the Countess of Geraci had work done on it, and the castle then followed the fortunes of the Ventimiglia, marquises of Geraci.
Its position between the Madonie and the Nebrodi, facing the sea, was strategic. Little of the ruins remains today, almost merged into the rock, but the view explains on its own why the castle was built there.
Things to see in San Mauro Castelverde
The castle ruins
From the church of San Giorgio, steps and a path lead to the top of the mountain. Traces of the walls are few; the view, on the other hand, is 360 degrees: Etna, the Aeolian Islands and the villages of the Madonie and Nebrodi valleys.
The church of San Giorgio Martire
This is the Chiesa Madre, founded by the Normans at the foot of the castle. It has three naves and small chapels with a marble relief at the foot of each altar. On the high altar is a sixteenth-century marble icon of the Gagini school with Saint George slaying the dragon; there is also a seventeenth-century wooden crucifix, probably by friar Umile da Petralia, and the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, entirely painted, with a fresco of manna falling from heaven.
Santa Maria de Francis
Built around 1260 and rebuilt higher up in 1634, it faces Piazza Municipio. It holds the marble Madonna del Soccorso by Domenico Gagini, from 1480, the baptismal font by Antonello Gagini from 1531, a Sienese-school panel of the Madonna and Child and an eighteenth-century majolica floor. Of the 14 majolica tiles of the Way of the Cross, made in Collesano in the eighteenth century, six are originals; copies are scattered along the village streets.
San Mauro Abate and the coloured bell tower
The patron saint’s church was built in the early seventeenth century on the initiative of the villagers. The sandstone portal is by master Luca Murena of Nicosia; inside is the altar of the Madonna dell’Udienza, with the date 1477 carved on its base, and the chapel with the vara, the saint’s processional float. The bell tower has a dome of glazed, coloured bricks that you can spot from afar.
Not far away is the church of the Badia, with its convent, dedicated to the Madonna della Catena.
The museums
The Museum of Sacred Art stands next to the old convent of the cloistered Dominican nuns: it holds a monstrance attributed to Benvenuto Cellini and, upstairs, an apse frescoed in 1583 with scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
The Ethno-anthropological Museum of Friendship between Peoples was founded in 1981 with objects donated by the villagers: looms, blacksmith’s tools, implements for wheat, olives and flax.
The council’s guide asks visitors to book visits to the museums and churches in advance: contact the town council a few days before.
Arches, sundials and Piazza Municipio
The old town has 66 arches and about ten sundials on its facades. Piazza Municipio has a flight of steps that doubles as an amphitheatre for shows; the nineteenth-century town hall has a clock from 1884. In Piazzetta Badia, a lookout with sea-themed sculptures reminds you that, according to the council’s guide, this is the only municipality in Sicily above 1,000 metres with a beach.
The Gole di Tiberio
The river Pollina has carved a narrow canyon, almost 300 metres long according to the council, in Upper Triassic limestone about 200 million years old. It is one of the sites of the Madonie UNESCO Global Geopark. A path with many steps leads down to the riverbed; inside the gorge you go in the water, and in summer authorised operators run trips upstream by raft or canoe.
All the practical details are on the Gole di Tiberio trail page; the park’s other gorges are in our guide to Madonie gorges and caves.
Hamlets and farm settlements
The territory is dotted with small farm hamlets: Borrello, Tiberio, Karsa, Scala, Botindari and Mallia. The old road linking them, today’s SP60, is one of the walks suggested by the council. There are more sundials at Casale Botindari and Karsa.
