Sleeping in the countryside

Farm stays in the Madonie

The Madonie agriturismi are almost all inland, in the countryside of Castellana Sicula, Polizzi Generosa, Petralia Sottana, Gangi and Collesano, close to the highest villages and the roads up to Piano Battaglia. They are working farms with rooms: their own produce often comes to the table, but meals and opening periods have to be checked with each one.

Opening hours, prices and seasons change: call before you go.

Why choose an agriturismo in the Madonie?

To sleep close to the trails and eat what is produced around you. Cheese, meat, pulses, olive oil: Madonie cooking is mountain cooking, and at an agriturismo you often find it a few steps from the barn or the vegetable garden.

How do you choose the area?

What should you check before booking?

Three things. Whether the restaurant is open on the evening you arrive. Whether the access road is paved, especially with a low car. And whether in winter the place stays open and heated.

Listings have the contacts taken from the source and the date of the last check. For the products to taste there is the guide to Madonie food, for country festivals the food festivals page.

All the other places to stay are in where to stay in the Madonie.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the Madonie agriturismi?
Mostly on the inland side, along the SS120 and the A19: in the countryside of Castellana Sicula, Polizzi Generosa, Petralia Sottana and Gangi, and around Collesano. They suit people who want to walk at Piano Battaglia in the morning without driving back to the coast every evening.
Can you also eat at an agriturismo?
An agriturismo may serve meals made with its own produce, but not always: it depends on the farm and the season. When you book, ask whether half board is available and whether the restaurant is open to non-residents.
Do you need a car to reach the agriturismi?
Almost always: agriturismi are outside the villages, often on country roads. In winter, above 900 to 1,000 metres, ask about the access road if snow is forecast, and check the chain rules on the main roads in the area.
Why do some masserie appear among hotels or B&Bs?
The list follows the type under which each place is recorded on OpenStreetMap, our data source. Some masserie and country houses are recorded as hotels or B&Bs. If you want a countryside stay, look at those pages too, filtering by town.
