Open data

Madonie open data: events, villages, trails and places to stay

The data we use to write this guide can be downloaded here, free of charge, as JSON and CSV; events are also available as iCal calendars. The files are rebuilt every time the site is published, so they always match the pages. Events and villages are licensed under CC BY 4.0. Trails, places to stay and places to eat come from OpenStreetMap and are licensed under the ODbL.

What can I download?

Five datasets, each as JSON and CSV, plus the event calendars in iCal format (.ics): one with all events, one for each town and one for each category. The files only contain data that also appears on the site’s pages, with its source. Every row links to the matching page in every language where it exists (url_it, url_en, url_es, url_fr, url_de). Field names are in Italian, as in our content system; the table below explains them.

Which licences apply?

Dataset Licence Credit line
Events, villages CC BY 4.0 Le Madonie (lemadonie.it)
Trails, places to stay, places to eat ODbL 1.0 © OpenStreetMap contributors; processing by Le Madonie (lemadonie.it)

We check events one by one against the official source (town council, organiser, Pro Loco): each edition carries the link to the source and the date of the check. Village population is the ISTAT estimate given in the village page, with its reference date in the popolazione_nota field.

How often are the files updated?

Every time the site is published: at least once a day, with the morning article. On Mondays the editors recheck the events of the following eight weeks and rebuild places to stay and eat from the latest OpenStreetMap extract. Every file says when it was generated: the generato field in the JSON, the last column of the CSV and the DTSTAMP field in the calendars.

Which fields are there?

Dataset Main fields
Events (one row per edition) nome (name), categoria, comune (town), luogo (venue), lat, lon, anno (year), inizio (start), fine (end), stato (programmato, rinviato, annullato: scheduled, postponed, cancelled), edizione_attuale (current edition), programma, fonte_ufficiale (official source), verificato (checked on)
Villages nome, quota_m (altitude), lat, lon (town centre, approximate), parco_delle_madonie, popolazione (population), popolazione_nota, popolazione_fonte
Trails nome, difficolta_cai (T, E, EE, EEA), partenza (start), partenza_lat, partenza_lon, distanza_km_indicativa (approximate distance), tempo_indicativo (approximate time, stops excluded), stagioni (seasons), osm_relazione
Places to stay and eat nome, tipo (type), comune, indirizzo (address), lat, lon, telefono, email, sito (website), orari_osm (opening_hours format), osm, verificato

Dates use the YYYY-MM-DD format. An empty field means the information is missing or not verified: we never estimate it.

How do I use them?

  • Calendar. Copy the address of an .ics file and add it to your calendar as a calendar “from URL” (in Google Calendar: Other calendars, From URL). It then updates on its own when we change a date.
  • Spreadsheet. The CSV files are UTF-8 with a comma as separator: LibreOffice Calc and Excel open them with the right accents.
  • Code. The JSON has the rows in the dati field and the list of fields in campi. An example in Python:
import pandas as pd
events = pd.read_csv("https://www.lemadonie.it/dati/eventi.csv")
print(events[events.edizione_attuale][["nome", "comune", "inizio"]])

The list of datasets with licences and file addresses is also available in machine-readable form, in the JSON catalogue.

What is not included?

GPX tracks of the trails: they are maintained by sentierisiciliani.it, and the link to the technical page is in the scheda_tecnica field. There are no weather forecasts, which you can get directly from Open-Meteo, and no personal data: for places to stay and eat we only include the public contact details found on OpenStreetMap.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this data in an app or a commercial website?
Both licences allow it, commercial use included. With CC BY 4.0 (events and villages) you only need to credit the source: Le Madonie (lemadonie.it), with a link. With the ODbL (trails, places to stay and eat) you also need to write "© OpenStreetMap contributors", and if you publish a derived database it must stay open under the same licence.
How do I credit lemadonie.it when I use the data?
For events and villages: "Data: Le Madonie (lemadonie.it), CC BY 4.0", with a link to this page. For trails, places to stay and places to eat: "Data: © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL; processing by Le Madonie (lemadonie.it)". The same sentence is written inside every JSON file, in the attribuzione field.
Why do trails, places to stay and places to eat have a different licence?
Because they come from OpenStreetMap. Places to stay and eat are rebuilt every week from the OpenStreetMap extract, and the distance, time and starting point of each trail are calculated from the OSM tracks. The OpenStreetMap ODbL licence also covers derived data, which is why these datasets are in separate files.
I found a mistake in the data: what should I do?
For events and villages, write to info@lemadonie.it with the link to the page and the correct source: we check it and the fix reaches the files with the next publication. Opening hours, phone numbers or addresses of places to stay and eat can be corrected directly on OpenStreetMap: the change reaches our extract the following Monday.
