Privacy notice
Privacy and cookies
lemadonie.it sets no cookies, uses no analytics or advertising tools and has no forms or accounts. The only data that travels is the technical data of any visit to a website, such as your IP address: the hosting provider receives it and, if you open the weather or a map, so does the service that provides it. Here is the full list, service by service.

Who is the data controller?
The Redazione Le Madonie, publisher of lemadonie.it. For any question or request about your data, write to info@lemadonie.it.
Does the site use cookies?
The site sets no cookies: no technical cookies, no analytics cookies, no profiling cookies. It doesn’t use Google Analytics or any other measurement tool, shows no advertising and loads no social media buttons or content. That is why you won’t see a cookie banner.
The fonts and the interactive map library (Leaflet) are served from our own domain, not from outside services.
What does the server record when you open a page?
The site is hosted by Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., United States). Like any web server, it receives some technical data with every request:
- IP address;
- date and time of the request;
- page or file requested;
- browser and operating system (user agent);
- the page you came from, if your browser sends it.
This data is used to deliver the pages, protect the site from abuse and fix technical problems. We don’t use it to profile you and we don’t combine it with other data. Cloudflare handles it under its privacy policy and, for transfers to the United States, relies on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running and protecting the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
What happens when you look at the weather?
Weather boxes appear on the home page, on the Weather page, on the pages of individual places and on village and trail pages. They contain the forecasts prepared in the morning. When a box comes into view, your browser asks Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com), a service run by OpenMeteo GmbH in Switzerland, for an updated forecast.
The request contains the coordinates of the forecast location, not your position: the site never asks for access to your location. Open-Meteo does receive your IP address, like any server. According to its privacy notice it uses it for technical reasons and to prevent abuse, acts as an independent controller and deletes its logs after 90 days.
What happens when you open an interactive map?
The interactive maps use map tiles from OpenTopoMap (tile.opentopomap.org), a volunteer project based on OpenStreetMap data. You’ll find them on the Map page, in the trails list when you choose the map view, and on the pages of events, hotels and restaurants that have a location.
The map loads when it comes into view or, if it is already visible when the page opens, at your first interaction with the page. From then on your browser downloads the tiles from OpenTopoMap’s servers, which receive your IP address. About the project: opentopomap.org/about.
The schematic maps of the park and of the weather points are drawn inside the page and don’t call any outside service.
What does the site store in your browser?
Two things, in the browser’s storage and not as cookies. They stay on your device and are never sent to us.
lm-theme, in localStorage: your choice between light and dark theme, saved only if you use the theme button. It stays until you clear the site’s data in your browser.- Weather forecasts, in sessionStorage, named after the address of the request to Open-Meteo: the last forecast downloaded, reused for 20 minutes to avoid repeating the request. They disappear when you close the tab.
What happens when you follow an external link?
Some buttons lead to other websites: “Directions to the start” opens Google Maps, other links open OpenStreetMap, sentierisiciliani.it or the sources we cite. The destination site receives your data only when you click, and from there its own privacy policy applies.
What do we do with the emails you send us?
If you write to info@lemadonie.it, we use your address and the content of your message only to reply and, if you report an event or a mistake, to check it. We don’t use them for newsletters or advertising and we don’t pass them on to anyone. We keep them for as long as it takes to handle your request; the message goes through the email service we use.
Legal basis: your request and our legitimate interest in replying to you (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR).
What are your rights?
The GDPR (Articles 15-22) gives you the right to ask for:
- access to your data and a copy of it;
- correction of inaccurate data;
- erasure;
- restriction of processing;
- objection to processing based on legitimate interest;
- portability of the data you gave us.
Write to info@lemadonie.it. For the data that Cloudflare, Open-Meteo and OpenTopoMap receive directly from your browser, you can also contact them. You always have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, or with the supervisory authority of your own country.
When does this page change?
When what the site does with data changes: a new outside service, an extra tool, a form. The date of the last update is at the top.
