The Madonie in winter: snow, nativity scenes and villages
A long snow weekend in Sicily: 3 days in the Madonie based in Petralia Sottana, with Piano Battaglia, nativity scenes and villages. Roads, chains, times.
In winter in the Madonie you spend 3 days with a single base, Petralia Sottana: the first between Petralia Sottana and Petralia Soprana, the second in the snow at Piano Battaglia, the only ski resort in western Sicily, the third between Gangi, Geraci Siculo and Castelbuono. From Palermo it’s about 290 km in total. Snow isn’t guaranteed: the plan works without it too.
At a glance
- Length: 3 days and 2 nights, ideal for a long weekend.
- Base: Petralia Sottana, 19 km from Piano Battaglia.
- Total distance: about 290 km from Palermo, 4 hours 50 minutes of driving without snow, calculated on OpenStreetMap.
- Snow: skiing, snowshoeing or sledging at Piano Battaglia, if there is snow and the lifts are open.
- Season: December to March. Nativity scenes in December, carnivals in February.
- Required (winter 2025/2026): snow chains on board or winter tyres on the A19 between Scillato and Mulinello from 15 November to 15 March, on the SS120, SS286 and SS643 from 1 December to 31 March.
Who is it for?
For people living in Sicily who want a snow weekend without flying. For visitors coming for the holidays who want to see the mountain towns at nativity-scene time.
You don’t need to ski. At Piano Battaglia you can snowshoe on the plateau and go sledging. If you have small children, the snow day adapts easily: keep sledging to open slopes, never on the pistes, and see the guide to sledging and snow with children.
When to go?
Snow at Piano Battaglia comes when it comes. According to our guide to snow in the Madonie, last winter the lifts restarted on 2 February, stopped after 4 days because of rain and reopened on 29 March. As of 19 October 2026 there is no opening date yet for the 2026-27 season. Before leaving, check the current state of the lifts and the Piano Battaglia forecast.
Dates with something extra, according to our event pages:
| Period | What’s on | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Immaculate Conception long weekend | Dolcemente Castelbuono, sweets and market stalls | Castelbuono |
| From about 20 December to 6 January | Presepe d’InCanto | Petralia Soprana |
| 26-29 December (recent editions) | Living nativity “Da Nazareth a Betlemme” | Gangi |
| February | Collesano Carnival and Carnevale delle Madonie | Collesano, Castellana Sicula |
The dates for winter 2026-27 haven’t been published yet: we update the event pages when the organisers announce them.
Roads, chains and getting there
From Palermo take the A19 towards Catania and exit at Tremonzelli, then the SS120 to Petralia Sottana: 105 km, about an hour and a half. From Catania exit at Irosa and take the SS290 to the SS120. Exits and distances are on our roads page.
On the ANAS roads listed in the orders you must carry snow chains or have winter tyres fitted. In winter 2025/2026, in the Madonie, the rule covered the SS120 from km 25 to km 137.440, the SS286 between km 15 and km 42.380 and the first 15 km of the SS643 from 1 December to 31 March, and the A19 between Scillato and Mulinello from 15 November to 15 March. With snow or ice the rule can also apply outside these dates.
The SP54 from Petralia Sottana to Piano Battaglia is a provincial road: closures and snow clearing are decided by the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The other road up from Polizzi Generosa, the SP119, has been closed by a landslide in 2026. How to manage on snow days, parking included, is explained in the guide getting to Piano Battaglia in winter.
Distances and times for the trip, calculated on 19 October 2026 with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, with no snow, traffic or stops:
| Leg | Roads | km | Driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palermo → Petralia Sottana | A19, SS120 | 105 | 1 h 30 |
| Petralia Sottana ↔ Petralia Soprana | SP29 | 3 | 5 min |
| Petralia Sottana → Piano Battaglia and back | SP54 | 38 | 55 min |

With snow on the SP54, times can double.
Day 1: Petralia Sottana and Petralia Soprana
Arrive for lunch and drop your bags. Petralia Sottana is home to the Madonie Park authority: stroll along the main street to the Chiesa Madre.
In the afternoon drive up to Petralia Soprana, 3 km higher. It’s the highest town in the park, at 1,147 metres, and was named Borgo dei Borghi in 2018. You explore it on foot between its 3 viewpoints: from the Loreto one, in clear winter air, you can see Etna. Between December and Epiphany the Presepe d’InCanto fills the centre.
Day 2: snow at Piano Battaglia
Go up early: on snowy weekends the plateau car parks fill by mid-morning. Piano Battaglia is a karst basin at about 1,600 metres below Monte Mufara. What you do depends on the snow:
- Skiing and snowboarding: a chairlift, a drag lift, a magic carpet and 3 pistes, when the lifts are open. Ski passes, opening times and ski school are in the guide to skiing at Piano Battaglia.
- Snowshoes: on the plateau on your own, higher up preferably with a guide. Routes and equipment in the guide to snowshoeing in the Madonie.
- Sledging: only on open slopes, never on the pistes. Where and how in the guide to sledging and snow with children.
With snow, the Pizzo Carbonara loop is no longer a grade E trail: our trail page warns that you need snowshoes or crampons and experience of snowy mountains. Before leaving the plateau, read the guide to snow safety.
For lunch there’s the Rifugio Giuliano Marini, with a restaurant, which the operator keeps open in the snow too. The other places to eat on the plateau are in the guide to mountain huts open in winter.
If there’s no snow
It happens. Then take a walk on the plateau and in the beech wood, bare and silent in winter, and come down early. In the afternoon go to Polizzi Generosa, 16 km from Petralia Sottana, for the Chiesa Madre and its fifteenth-century Flemish triptych.
Day 3: Gangi, Geraci Siculo and Castelbuono
Gangi was named Borgo dei Borghi in 2014. In the crypt of the Chiesa Madre lie the mummified bodies of the town’s priests from 1725 to 1872. Between 26 and 29 December, in recent editions, the town has hosted a living nativity scene.
In Geraci Siculo walk up to the ruins of the Ventimiglia castle: it’s the photo at the top, taken in January 2017 in the snow. Then the SS286 drops through the woods to Castelbuono.
In winter the Museo Civico in Castelbuono castle opens daily from 9.30 am to 4.45 pm, according to the museum’s hours checked on 19 October 2026. Inside is the Palatine Chapel of Saint Anne with Serpotta stucco. Before leaving, stop at a pastry shop: we write about manna, the town’s speciality, in our guide to Castelbuono manna.
Where to stay and eat
Petralia Sottana is the base because, of the towns with plenty of places to stay, it’s the closest to Piano Battaglia: 19 km of SP54. You’ll find them in where to stay in Petralia Sottana, and restaurants in where to eat in Petralia Sottana.
If you want to wake up in the snow, the only refuge on the plateau that we have verified as open in winter is the Rifugio Giuliano Marini, with 18 rooms and 68 beds according to the operator. On snowy weekends, book early.
If the weather is bad
In heavy snow or ice, don’t go up: roads close and reopen after clearing. With a weather warning, check the regional Civil Protection bulletin and call 1518, the free CCISS traffic line, available round the clock.
There are indoor alternatives: the main churches of Petralia Soprana, Gangi and Polizzi Generosa, and Castelbuono castle. Days 2 and 3 can be swapped if the snow arrives late.

- Fit chains before the snowy stretch, not halfway up the climb.
