Snow in the Madonie

Winter mountain huts and where to stay at Piano Battaglia

The Rifugio Marini on the plateau, where to eat between runs, places to stay within 6 km of the slopes and the closed huts you still find on maps.

Which mountain huts are open in winter?

One, verified: the Rifugio Giuliano Marini, at the foot of Monte Mufara, a few dozen metres from the Piano Battaglia plateau.

It has 18 rooms and 68 beds, all with a bathroom, and a restaurant, the Locanda Alte Madonie. The operator keeps it open in snowy weather too: for Easter 2026, with the plateau still white, it offered lunches and two-night stays.

Where can you eat on the plateau?

  • Ristoro Lo Scoiattolo, in the middle of the plateau: quick meals, where skiers stop.
  • Locanda Alte Madonie, inside the Rifugio Marini.
  • Rifugio Grifone, on the SP 54 a few hundred metres before the plateau. Today it is mainly a place to eat and the base of the Il Grifone environmental education centre.

Which ones are closed?

On maps you still find names that won’t give you a bed in winter.

  • Rifugio Orestano, at Piano Zucchi: for the Metropolitan City of Palermo it was a landmark until 2008.
  • Former La Montanina hotel, at Piano Battaglia: closed for more than 25 years.
  • Youth hostel at Piano Battaglia: we have found no recent news or working contacts, so we leave it out for now.

Our listings also include the huts at Piano Pomo, above Castelbuono. We have no sources on how they are run or whether they open in winter, so we don’t list them here.

And if everything up high is full?

Go down to a village. Between Petralia Sottana, Petralia Soprana, Polizzi Generosa, Isnello and Collesano the Metropolitan City counts more than 2,500 beds and over 120 places to eat.

Below you will find the places in our listings within 6 km of Piano Battaglia or Piano Zucchi, with a phone number, email or website to ask whether they are open. For the villages see where to stay in Petralia Sottana and where to stay in Isnello.
