A weekend in the Madonie: 2 days around Castelbuono
A weekend in the Madonie with one base, Castelbuono: the Piano Sempria woods, the Gole di Tiberio and Pollina. Distances, driving times, where to stay.
For a weekend in the Madonie without changing beds, spend 1 night in Castelbuono and explore the northern side of the park. On Saturday you visit the Ventimiglia castle and walk in the Piano Sempria woods. On Sunday you go down to the Gole di Tiberio gorge, up to Pollina and home along the coast. From Palermo it’s about 230 km in total, more than half on the motorway.
At a glance
- Base: Castelbuono, 1 night.
- Starting from: Palermo, 90 km from Castelbuono, or Cefalù, 23 km.
- Total distance: about 230 km from Palermo and back, about 4 hours 30 minutes of driving without stops, calculated on OpenStreetMap.
- Walks: the Castelbuono woods loop and the Gole di Tiberio, both grade E.
- Towns: Castelbuono and Pollina, with Cefalù as an option.
- Season: April to October. Avoid the gorge after heavy rain.
Who is this weekend for?
For people who want 2 easy days: one suitcase to unpack, short drives, walks in the woods and along a river instead of a summit. It suits couples, friends and teenagers who enjoy walking.
If you’re after the park’s highest peak and the inland towns, our magazine has a different plan: the weekend from Palermo with Pizzo Carbonara and the Petralias, with a night in Petralia Sottana. The two trips don’t overlap. Do one now and keep the other for next time.
When to go?
April to October. In spring the woods are green and the river has water. In summer the gorge is the coolest part of the trip, and authorised operators take people up it by raft, as our trail page explains.
In late October Castelbuono hosts the Funghi Fest: in 2026 from 23 to 25 October. If you’re there then, book your room well ahead and expect a crowded centre.
In winter the plan only half works. The road to Piano Sempria can have snow and ice, and you can’t go into the gorge after rain. For a cold-weather weekend, see the Madonie in winter.
How to get to Castelbuono
From Palermo take the A19 towards Catania and, at the Buonfornello junction, the A20 towards Messina. Exit at Pollina-Castelbuono and climb about 12 km on the SS286. From Catania or Messina, see the distances on our roads page.
The legs of the weekend, calculated on 19 October 2026 with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, with no traffic or stops:
| Leg | Roads | km | Driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palermo → Castelbuono | A19, A20, SS286 | 90 | 1 h 20 |
| Castelbuono → Piano Sempria and back | mountain road | 17 | 40 min |
| Castelbuono → Gole di Tiberio | SS286 | 11 | 20 min |
| Gole di Tiberio → Pollina | SS286, SP130, SP25 | 18 | 40 min |
| Pollina → Cefalù | SS113 | 23 | 35 min |
| Cefalù → Palermo | A20, A19 | 68 | 1 h |
If you start from Cefalù, drop the first and last legs: that leaves under 100 km over 2 days.
Saturday: Castelbuono and the Piano Sempria woods
Morning in town
Castelbuono grew up around the castle that Count Francesco I Ventimiglia ordered in 1317. Today it houses the Museo Civico. Don’t miss the Palatine Chapel of Saint Anne, decorated in 1684 with stucco by Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta on a gold background.
From April to October the museum opens daily from 9.30 am to 1 pm and from 3 to 6.30 pm. From November to March it stays open from 9.30 am to 4.45 pm. These are the hours published by the museum and checked on 19 October 2026; the museum warns they may change.
Then walk around the centre and stop at a pastry shop: the local speciality is manna, collected by cutting the bark of ash trees. The story is in our guide to Castelbuono manna.
Afternoon in the woods
Above the town the road climbs to Piano Sempria, a plateau at about 1,180 metres: 8 km, around twenty minutes. This is the start of the Castelbuono woods loop, on forest tracks and paths through holm oaks, downy oaks, beeches and huge old holly trees.
It’s a loop, so you get back to the car without retracing your steps. Check the map downloaded on your phone at the junctions between forest tracks. Before going up, look at the Piano Sempria forecast.
Evening
Dinner in town. The addresses are in where to eat in Castelbuono: choose by where you’re staying, the centre is small and walkable.
Sunday: Gole di Tiberio, Pollina and home
Morning at the Gole di Tiberio
From the SS286 to the start at Case Marcatagliastro it’s about twenty minutes. The Gole di Tiberio are a narrow canyon cut by the Pollina river, in the municipality of San Mauro Castelverde.
The path is about 2 km one way, around half an hour, with little climbing. You come back the same way, so allow a good hour with stops. Inside the gorge you can only go in the water: in summer, authorised operators run trips upstream by raft or canoe.
Bring shoes that can get wet and a change of clothes. After heavy rain the river rises and access becomes dangerous: in that case, skip this stop.
Midday in Pollina
From Case Marcatagliastro to Pollina it’s 18 km, about forty minutes. At the top of the village stands the Maurolico tower, where astronomer Francesco Maurolico watched the sky between 1548 and 1550. Below it is the open-air Pietrarosa theatre, carved into the rock and opened in 1979.
Pollina is manna country too. For lunch, see where to eat in Pollina, or head down to the coast. The village page is Pollina.
Afternoon: Cefalù or straight home
From Pollina to Cefalù it’s 23 km. If you have time, stop for the Norman cathedral, part since 2015 of the UNESCO site Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale. Then 68 km of motorway to Palermo. The town page is Cefalù.
Where to stay
Castelbuono is the base because it sits halfway between the woods and the gorge: over 2 days you never drive more than 40 minutes between stops. Places to stay are in where to stay in Castelbuono. If you prefer the sea, stay in Cefalù: add about 25 minutes morning and evening.
If it rains
In light rain Saturday stays the same: the castle is indoors and the woods are fine under a grey sky with the right shoes. With thunderstorms, skip the woods and stay in town.
On Sunday, if it has rained a lot in the previous days, skip the gorge. Instead, drive up to San Mauro Castelverde, at 1,050 metres, and come down to Cefalù along the coast: from Pollina it’s 31 km, about fifty minutes. Or go to Isnello for a visit to GAL Hassin, the astronomy park: the standard visit lasts 2 hours 30 minutes, with planetarium and museum, and is booked on its website.

Frequently asked questions
- What can you do on a weekend in the Madonie?
- With a base in Castelbuono: on Saturday the Ventimiglia castle and the loop in the Piano Sempria woods, on Sunday the Gole di Tiberio and Pollina, coming back via Cefalù. It's about 230 km from Palermo and back, with short hops between stops.
- Is it better to stay in Castelbuono or Cefalù?
- For this trip Castelbuono works better: it's 20 minutes from the woods and 20 minutes from the gorge. Cefalù is fine if you want evenings by the sea, but you add about 25 minutes of driving each time you set off.
- Are the Gole di Tiberio suitable for children?
- The path is short, about 2 km one way, with little climbing and the water always close by: that's why our trail page lists it among the walks best suited to children. After heavy rain, though, access is dangerous. For a plan built around kids, see the Madonie with children itinerary.
