Ypsigrock is Castelbuono’s independent music festival, founded in 1997 by a group of local young people passionate about indie and alternative rock and organised by the Associazione Culturale Glenn Gould. It’s held every year over four days in early August, with the main stage in Piazza Castello, below the Ventimiglia castle, and other stages spread across the old town. Its rule is “Ypsi Once”: each artist plays here only once. In 2026 the 29th edition ran from 6 to 9 August.

When is it held?

From Thursday to Sunday, in early August. The latest editions were from 8 to 11 August 2024, from 7 to 10 August 2025 and from 6 to 9 August 2026. The ticketed concerts start in the late afternoon; the stages never play at the same time, so you can see every show (Ypsigrock). The 2027 dates haven’t come out yet.

The Ypsi Once rule and the line-up

The bill is built around one rule: you only get on the festival’s stages once in your life under the same name. That’s why the line-up is new every year, and many artists have played Castelbuono as their first ever Italian show. Among the names who have passed through, the festival lists The National, Mogwai, Beach House, Belle & Sebastian, Primal Scream, Caribou, Dinosaur Jr. and Cigarettes After Sex.

In 2026 the line-up included Dry Cleaning, Cate Le Bon, Black Country, New Road, The Antlers, Wednesday, Horsegirl, Friko, jasmine.4.t and Chet Faker (The Line of Best Fit).

The stages

Stage Where Doors (2026)
Ypsi Once Stage, the main one Piazza Castello, between the medieval arch, the stairway and the Ventimiglia castle 7:30 pm
Ypsi & Love Stage Cloister of the former convent of San Francesco, home of the Museo Minà Palumbo 4:45 pm
Mr. Y Stage Centro Sud, former church of the Crocifisso, corso Umberto I (only for some indoor shows) per programme
Cuzzocrea Stage Ypsicamping, San Focà, for after-shows and DJ sets after the concerts

During the evening concerts in Piazza Castello, a video made by an artist chosen by the Museo Civico, which the festival has worked with since 2014, is projected onto the castle façade. The box office is in via Sant’Anna.

Tickets

In 2026 the four-day festival pass cost 139 euros and the day ticket 56 euros. For children aged 6 to 12 there was the Child Festival Pass at 11 euros and the Child day ticket at 7 euros; up to age 5 entry is free with a paying adult. Anyone aged 15 or under must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult, and little ones need ear defenders.

Ypsicamping

The festival sets up its own campsite in the San Focà picnic area, in a pine wood of the Madonie Park above 700 metres, about 6.5 km from the centre. In 2026 the Ypsicamping Pass cost 52 euros per person, the same for one or four nights, free up to age 13, and didn’t include the concert ticket. A shuttle linked the campsite with Castelbuono, with a 15-euro pass and runs timed with buses from Palermo and Cefalù station. Campervans can’t get in: they have a free area at the Totò Spallino sports ground, at the entrance to the town (Ypsicamping).

The festival warns that nights at the campsite can be very cold and that it sometimes rains: bring warm clothes, a rain cape (umbrellas aren’t allowed in the concert areas) and a torch.

Practical tips

  • Getting there. Castelbuono sits at 423 metres. From Palermo it’s about 90 km and an hour and 20 minutes, via the Pollina-Castelbuono exit on the A20; from Cefalù 23 km (see getting to the Madonie by car). Without a car there are SAIS buses from Palermo and from Cefalù station.
  • Where to stay. During the festival the town fills up: book early and see where to stay in Castelbuono. The festival also suggests the “Ypsi & Love” Facebook group for finding accommodation.
  • Where to eat. Between shows see where to eat in Castelbuono; Castelbuono’s manna has an article of its own, Madonie manna.
  • The hills. The stages in the centre are close together but linked by uphill and downhill streets: wear comfortable shoes.
  • Weather. Check the Castelbuono weather before you go.

Where are the stages?
The main stage, the Ypsi Once Stage, is in Piazza Castello, between the medieval arch, the stairway and the Ventimiglia castle.
