Things to do in the Madonie
Photography in the Madonie: autumn colours, snow, flowers, sunrise and sunset at Piano Battaglia, the Milky Way over Isnello, hill villages, wildlife, drones.
The Madonie are best photographed at three times of year: from October to early November for the yellow and red beech woods, after a snowfall at Piano Battaglia, and on moonless summer nights for the Milky Way over Isnello, where the sky is Starlight-certified. All year round there are the hilltop villages such as Petralia Soprana and Gangi, with Etna on the horizon on clear days.
Here you will find the light calendar, sunrise and sunset times at Piano Battaglia calculated for this guide, subjects by season and the Park rules that also apply with a camera in your hand.
At a glance
Each season has a strong subject. This table brings them together, with the page on this site where you find the rest.
| Season | Subject | Where | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| October-November | Yellow, red and orange beech woods | Piano Battaglia, Pizzo Carbonara, Piano Pomo, Vallone Madonna degli Angeli | Autumn colours in the Madonie |
| December-March | Snow on the plateaus, frosted beeches | Piano Battaglia, Monte Mufara | Snow in the Madonie |
| April-June | Flowers, beeches in new leaf, green meadows | Pizzo Dipilo, high plateaus | Madonie plateaus |
| July-August | Milky Way, shooting stars, clear skies up high | Isnello and plateaus far from lights | Stargazing in the Madonie |
| All year | Hilltop villages, Etna on the horizon | Petralia Soprana, Gangi, Geraci Siculo | Madonie villages |
There is no official calendar for autumn colours: they depend on that year’s night-time cold, wind and rain. Before setting off, look at the Piano Battaglia webcam, which the Park authority links on its website, and the mountain forecast.
We calculated sunrise and sunset times for the coordinates of Piano Battaglia using the algorithm of NOAA, the US weather and ocean agency. They assume a clear horizon, in Italian time: in practice the surrounding mountains hide the sun for a few minutes after sunrise and a few minutes before sunset.
| Date (2027) | Twilight begins | Sunrise | Sunset | Twilight ends | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 March | 5:41 | 6:07 | 18:16 | 18:43 | 12 h 9 min |
| 21 June | 5:10 | 5:42 | 20:29 | 21:01 | 14 h 47 min |
| 23 September | 6:26 | 6:52 | 19:00 | 19:26 | 12 h 8 min |
| 21 December | 6:46 | 7:16 | 16:48 | 17:17 | 9 h 32 min |
Civil twilight is the half hour or so before sunrise and after sunset when there is still enough light to shoot without flash. It is also the last useful light for walking down a trail: if you stay on a summit for sunset, you need a head torch and must know the descent well.
A real example. Three young people who reached the top of Pizzo Carbonara lost the path in the dark on the way down, and Alpine Rescue teams brought them back. Sunset on the summit is beautiful, but it needs planning.
The Madonie beech woods are the most sought-after subject in autumn. In the Vallone Madonna degli Angeli, at Polizzi Generosa, beech and holm oak grow on opposite slopes: in autumn one turns yellow and the other stays green, and the last Madonie firs, Abies nebrodensis, grow there too. Above Castelbuono, from Piano Sempria, you reach the giant hollies.
For woodland types, monumental trees and where to find them, there is the guide to Madonie woods and beech forests.
After a snowfall, when the sky clears, Piano Battaglia changes face: frost-covered beeches, white plateaus, peaks against a blue sky. These are days to make the most of quickly, because sun and wind melt the frost in a few hours. Before going up, check the roads page: with snow the road may require chains.
Petralia Soprana, at 1,147 metres, is the highest municipality in the Madonie: from its viewpoints, on clear days, you can see Etna and the Sicani mountains. Gangi has its famous photo: the pyramid-shaped town with Etna behind, on the approach along the SS120. Geraci Siculo, Sclafani Bagni on its crag and San Mauro Castelverde above the gorges are the other villages to look at with a telephoto lens.
The best light on the village stone is the low light of morning and late afternoon. In Gangi the houses take on the colour of the sunset.
From the Rocca di Cefalù you see the cathedral, the harbour and the beach from above. Watch the opening hours: last entry is two hours before closing, which in winter time is at 17:00. In the Gole di Tiberio, the canyon of the Pollina river at San Mauro Castelverde, it’s best to shoot when the sun is not overhead, to avoid harsh contrast between rock and water.
In spring the plateaus fill with flowers. The 2026 Geopark Week programme included a late-May walk from Isnello to the slopes of Pizzo Dipilo to see the broom Genista demarcoi in bloom. During the European Geoparks Week in 2026 there were also guided visits to the Park’s geosites.
The place for stars is Isnello. The area of GAL Hassin and the church of the Annunziata is certified as a Starlight Stellar Park, and since 2015 the Comune has redone its street lighting, cutting light pollution by a factor of three. In its history page, GAL Hassin publishes a photo of the Milky Way over the village.
A few practical tips:
In summer GAL Hassin runs observation evenings at its telescopes and, in August, shooting star nights. Times and prices are in the guide to stargazing in the Madonie.
The Park rules apply to photographers too:
We found no drone rules published by the Parco delle Madonie authority. Before taking off, do two things:
In any case the ban on disturbing wildlife applies, and a noisy drone certainly disturbs it.
If your photo project starts from a trail, first read the guide to hiking in the Madonie and the article on mountain safety.
