The Trail della Luna is a two-stage trail running race on the paths around Caltavuturo, in the Madonie Park. The first stage is run on Saturday evening, in the dark, with a head torch; the second on Sunday morning. Alongside the race there are non-competitive walks, a trail for youngsters and one to do with your dog. It’s organised by ASD Ecotrail Sicilia, and in 2026 it was run on 22 and 23 August.

When is it held?

In August, over a weekend, starting and finishing in Piazza San Francesco. The latest editions were on 10 and 11 August 2024, 9 and 10 August 2025 and 22 and 23 August 2026. The 2027 dates haven’t come out yet: the calendar is published on the Ecotrail Sicilia website.

The distances

Event Distance Climbing
First stage, night 14 km 965 m
Second stage, day 16-17 km 1,065-1,120 m
Long walktrail 14 km or 16-17 km as the stages
Short walktrail 6 km 350 m
Junior Trail (under 18) and Doggy Trail 3 km 150 m

For the 2026 second stage the official sources don’t match: the rules gave 17 km and 1,120 metres, the race page and results 16 km and 1,065 metres, as in 2024. The routes are at least 90% off-road, with very steep sections and rough ground, and the rules advise against the race for anyone not properly trained. Where the route crosses roads open to traffic, the highway code applies.

For the day stage, the same list without the torch. The kit is checked at race number collection, and anyone without it doesn’t get a number. Trail shoes, poles, a cap and a food reserve are recommended.

Entries and fees

The race is open to members of ACSI, FIDAL or Runcard with a medical certificate for competitive sport; for the walktrails a non-competitive certificate is enough. In 2026 fees rose as the race approached: both stages cost 35 euros by 2 August and 50 euros on the day, a single stage from 20 to 35 euros, the long walktrail from 13 to 18 euros, the short one from 10 to 15, junior and doggy trail 5 euros. The race pack was guaranteed only to those who entered by 16 August.

Practical tips

  • Getting there. Caltavuturo sits at 635 metres. From Palermo it’s about 76 km and an hour and 20 minutes, via the Scillato exit on the A19 and then the SP24 (see getting to the Madonie by car). Sources don’t list dedicated car parks.
  • Where to stay. With the night stage finishing late and Sunday’s start at 8:30 am, it’s worth sleeping nearby: see where to stay in Caltavuturo and where to eat in Caltavuturo.
  • Weather. In bad weather the organisers can change or suspend the route: check the Caltavuturo weather.
