The feast of the Spirito Santo in Gangi reaches its peak on Whit Monday. That afternoon more than forty statues of saints are carried down on shoulders from the Chiesa Madre, in the upper part of the village, to the Sanctuary of the Spirito Santo at the foot of the town. In front of the church the bearers run three times back and forth with the statues: these are the Miracula. In 2026 the procession was on Monday 25 May, after ten days of celebrations that began on the 14th.
Thousands of worshippers come from all over Sicily. Local media describe the Gangi sanctuary as the only one in Italy dedicated to the Holy Spirit, and 2026 marked 450 years since its dedication.
The sanctuary and the feast
The Sanctuary of the Spirito Santo stands on the slopes of Monte Marone, in the lower part of Gangi. The feast has been repeated for over four centuries, according to Madonie Press, and is organised by the Sanctuary’s rectory, led by rector Don Giuseppe Amato, with the feast committee, the confraternities and the town council.
The date follows Easter: the main day is the Monday after Pentecost, fifty days after Easter. That is why it falls between May and June and changes every year.
The procession of the saints and the Miracula
On Monday afternoon, at 16:30, the procession leaves the Chiesa Madre in Piazza del Popolo. There are more than forty statues, many carved by the Gangi artist Filippo Quattrocchi (1734-1818). The order is fixed: the youngest confraternity opens, the oldest, that of the Santissimo Salvatore, closes.
The procession goes downhill through the village to the sanctuary. There, in front of the church, “a cursa e i miracula di santi” is renewed: the bearers, with the heavy statues on their shoulders, make three runs back and forth as a sign of devotion. It is the most awaited moment, amid applause and prayers. In the evening the feast ends with fireworks.
The evening before, on Pentecost Sunday, the Painting of the Holy Spirit is carried from the sanctuary to the Chiesa Madre; on Monday morning it sets off again from the Chiesa Madre towards the sanctuary.

Getting there, where to stay and what to see
Gangi is about 116 km from Palermo (1 hour 45) and about 58 km from Cefalù (1 hour), according to our calculation on OpenStreetMap without traffic. From Palermo you take the A19: the rest is in the guide to Madonie roads. The sources do not mention dedicated parking; the procession route runs from the centre to the lower part of the village, so it is best to leave the car early and move on foot.
For the night there is the list of where to stay in Gangi. Before you set off, check the Gangi weather. In summer Gangi celebrates again with the Sagra della Spiga, and at Christmas with the living nativity. The other patron saints’ feasts are in the calendar of religious festivals in the Madonie.
