Piano Battaglia or Etna for skiing: which should you choose?

Piano Battaglia or Etna for skiing: distances from Palermo and Catania, lifts, slopes, ski passes and the 2025/26 season compared, with a verdict for each trip.

Updated on 20 October 2026

What to choose, in short

If you start from Palermo, choose Piano Battaglia: it is about 90 km and 1 hour 40 by car, against more than 3 hours to Etna. If you start from Catania, or want the longest season, choose Etna: in 2025/26 the Etna Nord lifts ran from 31 January to 12 April, while at Piano Battaglia the snow kept the slopes open for only a few days. Either way, opening depends on the snow: check the operator's latest notice before you leave.

Piano Battaglia and Etna are the two places to ski in Sicily, and the choice depends mostly on where you start. Piano Battaglia, in the Madonie, is an hour and 40 from Palermo and has three runs served by a chairlift, a drag lift and a magic carpet. Etna has two ski areas, Etna Sud at Nicolosi and Etna Nord at Piano Provenzana, less than an hour and a half from Catania.

The table below has the numbers: distances, lifts, altitudes, prices and how the last season went. Every figure has a source and the date we checked it.

Which one is closer?

It depends on the city. From central Palermo Piano Battaglia is 90 km away, via the Buonfornello exit of the A19 and then the SP9 and SP54. Etna is more than 220 km away. From Catania it is the other way round: Rifugio Sapienza is 35 km away, Piano Battaglia 155.

In winter, on the roads listed in the orders, you need snow chains on board or winter tyres for Piano Battaglia. The SP119 from Polizzi Generosa has been closed by a landslide since February 2026: the open roads go up from Petralia Sottana and from Isnello. Roads, parking and rules are in the guide to Piano Battaglia in winter, distances from Palermo on our page about getting to the Madonie from Palermo.

Which one opens more?

Neither has guaranteed snow: the lifts open when there is enough snowfall and close with rain or warm weather. Last winter showed the difference well.

  • Piano Battaglia: the lifts reopened on 2 February 2026 and by 6 February they were already closed, after a night of rain. They all restarted on 29 March; from 31 March only the drag lift and the magic carpet were running.
  • Etna Nord: the Piano Provenzana lifts opened on 31 January 2026 and, with snow the local papers called a record, the season was extended to 12 April.

One winter does not make a rule. Altitude does count, though: the Piano Battaglia chairlift tops out at 1,833 metres, while the Etna cable car starts at Rifugio Sapienza, at 1,910 metres, and rises to 2,500.

What will you find on the slopes?

Piano Battaglia has three runs, about 4.5 km in total: the Giovanni Falcone (blue), served by the drag lift, and the Paolo Borsellino (red) and Vincenzo Mollica (black), served by the Monte Mufara chairlift. The base area has a magic carpet for beginners. Lifts, hours and ski school are in the guide to skiing at Piano Battaglia.

At Etna Nord in 2025/26 the Pouchot chairlift and the Anfiteatro, Coccinelle and Monte Conca drag lifts were running, and there was the Pojana cross-country track, with 5 loops. Since 2026 helmets are compulsory for everyone. For Etna Sud we found no official list of the runs open last season.

What if there is no snow?

It happens often, on both mountains. At Piano Battaglia you can still go snowshoeing when there is a little snow, climb Pizzo Carbonara with the right gear or spend the day in the villages. The season status, with sources, is in the snow in the Madonie section, and the mountain forecast in the Piano Battaglia weather.
