## Along the way

- From Castelbuono to Isnello, two Madonie villages
- The pilgrims' way up to the Gibilmanna sanctuary
- The Salvabosco path and the descent towards the sea
- Arrival at the Norman cathedral of Cefalù
- The stage that completes the Via dei Frati

The eighth and last stage of the Via dei Frati goes from Castelbuono to Cefalù via Isnello and the Gibilmanna sanctuary: about 26 km and 8 hours 30 minutes of walking without stops, with about 800 metres of ascent and over 1,150 of descent according to the Madonie Park. It is demanding, and the Park itself suggests splitting it over two days.

It ends in front of Cefalù cathedral, with the sea before you.

## Why walk this stage

To arrive on foot from the heart of the Madonie at the Tyrrhenian Sea, as friars and pilgrims did. In a single day you pass two mountain villages, a hilltop Marian sanctuary and a Norman town by the sea.

## What you see along the stage

You start from Piazza Margherita, the heart of **Castelbuono**, and go down Via Isnello to the SP9. In **Isnello** you cross the village along Via Roma, Via Santissima Annunziata and Via Celso.

After a steep descent into the valley, you climb back towards **Gibilmanna** along the pilgrims' way. The sanctuary, looked after by Capuchin friars, stands on the flank of Pizzo Sant'Angelo, at about 850 metres according to the friars. It is the last big climb of the route.

From the sanctuary you take the **Salvabosco path** and, after a mountain stretch, descend towards **Cefalù**, cutting the hairpins of the SP54 bis several times. The natural finish is the cathedral.

## How to split the stage

The Park suggests two possible stops. The first is Isnello: see [where to stay in Isnello](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/isnello/where-to-stay/). The second is Gibilmanna, before the final descent.

From the sanctuary to the centre of Cefalù there are about 8.4 km and about 865 metres of descent, according to the Sentieri Siciliani guide's calculations on the stage geometry. If you want to walk only this stretch, you need to arrange how to get up to the sanctuary: in 2026 the town of Cefalù launched the tender for repair works on the SP54 bis to Gibilmanna, so check [Madonie roads](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/roads/) before counting on a lift by car.

## Who it is for and when to go

In one go, for trained walkers. Split in two, for anyone who regularly walks a few hours. The final descent is long and on mixed ground: poles help.

It is a low stage, below 900 metres, so it also works on clear winter days. Spring and autumn remain the best seasons. In summer start at dawn. Check the [weather in Castelbuono](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/weather/castelbuono/) and in [Cefalù](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/weather/cefalu/).

## Sleeping and eating

The night before, the base is Castelbuono: [where to stay in Castelbuono](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/castelbuono/where-to-stay/). At the finish you have all of Cefalù: [where to stay in Cefalù](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/cefalu/where-to-stay/) and [where to eat in Cefalù](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/cefalu/where-to-eat/). For the midway stop, [where to eat in Isnello](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/isnello/where-to-eat/).

The Amici della Via dei Frati association lists on its website the places that host walkers and the form for the pilgrim credential.

## Combine it with

- The next day, in Cefalù, the climb to the [Rocca and the Temple of Diana](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/the-rocca-di-cefalu-and-the-temple-of-diana/).
- In Isnello, at the end of April, the [feast of the Santissimo Crocifisso](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/events/celebrations-for-the-ss-crocifisso-isnello/); in early September that of [San Nicola](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/events/festa-di-san-nicolo-di-bari-isnello/).
- In Cefalù, in August, the [feast of the Santissimo Salvatore](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/events/festa-del-santissimo-salvatore-cefalu/).

## Tips

- In Isnello stock up on water and food: the Park lists no water points on the stage.
- Count the daylight hours, especially if you do it in one day.
- On the stretches along the SP54 bis walk in single file, facing traffic.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long is stage 8 of the Via dei Frati?

From Castelbuono to Cefalù the track is about 26 km and the page calculates about 8 hours 30 minutes of walking without stops. The Madonie Park gives about 800 metres of ascent and over 1,150 of descent and grades it demanding. For many people it is better split over two days.

### Where can you split stage 8?

The Park suggests two places to spend a night: Isnello or the Gibilmanna sanctuary, before the final descent to Cefalù. That way the stage becomes two lighter days, with time to visit the villages.

### How far is Gibilmanna from Cefalù on foot?

On the stage geometry in OpenStreetMap, from the sanctuary to the centre of Cefalù there are about 8.4 km and about 865 metres of descent, according to the calculations in the Sentieri Siciliani guide. The route goes down the Salvabosco path and cuts the hairpins of the SP54 bis several times.

### When is the best time for stage 8?

Spring and autumn, and also clear winter days, because the stage stays below 900 metres. In summer the descent to Cefalù is very hot: start at dawn and reach the sea before midday.

### Is stage 8 suitable for someone who has never done a long-distance walk?

In one go it is hard for a beginner: 26 km with a lot of descent. Split in two, with a night in Isnello or Gibilmanna, it is within reach of anyone who walks regularly. Even just the stretch from Gibilmanna to Cefalù makes a good day, provided you arrange how to get to the sanctuary.
