The Madonie are best photographed at three times of year: **from October to early November** for the yellow and red beech woods, **after a snowfall** at Piano Battaglia, and **on moonless summer nights** for the Milky Way over Isnello, where the sky is Starlight-certified. All year round there are the hilltop villages such as Petralia Soprana and Gangi, with Etna on the horizon on clear days.

Here you will find the light calendar, sunrise and sunset times at Piano Battaglia calculated for this guide, subjects by season and the Park rules that also apply with a camera in your hand.

**At a glance**

- **Autumn**: beech woods above 1,500 metres change colour from October to the first half of November.
- **Winter**: snow and frost at Piano Battaglia and on the peaks, in good winters between December and March.
- **Spring**: flowers; in late May the broom *Genista demarcoi* blooms below Pizzo Dipilo.
- **Summer**: long days and nights for the Milky Way, Starlight sky at Isnello.
- **Rules**: no going off-trail, no picking plants, no disturbing wildlife; for drones check d-flight and ask the Park authority.

## The photographer's calendar in the Madonie

Each season has a strong subject. This table brings them together, with the page on this site where you find the rest.

| Season | Subject | Where | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| October-November | Yellow, red and orange beech woods | Piano Battaglia, Pizzo Carbonara, Piano Pomo, Vallone Madonna degli Angeli | [Autumn colours in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/magazine/autumn-beech-woods-madonie/) |
| December-March | Snow on the plateaus, frosted beeches | Piano Battaglia, Monte Mufara | [Snow in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/snow/) |
| April-June | Flowers, beeches in new leaf, green meadows | Pizzo Dipilo, high plateaus | [Madonie plateaus](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/nature/plateaus/) |
| July-August | Milky Way, shooting stars, clear skies up high | Isnello and plateaus far from lights | [Stargazing in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/things-to-do/stargazing/) |
| All year | Hilltop villages, Etna on the horizon | Petralia Soprana, Gangi, Geraci Siculo | [Madonie villages](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/) |

There is no official calendar for autumn colours: they depend on that year's night-time cold, wind and rain. Before setting off, look at the Piano Battaglia webcam, which the Park authority links on its website, and the [mountain forecast](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/weather/piano-battaglia/).

## Sunrise and sunset at Piano Battaglia

We calculated sunrise and sunset times for the coordinates of Piano Battaglia using the algorithm of NOAA, the US weather and ocean agency. They assume a clear horizon, in Italian time: in practice the surrounding mountains hide the sun for a few minutes after sunrise and a few minutes before sunset.

| Date (2027) | Twilight begins | Sunrise | Sunset | Twilight ends | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 March | 5:41 | 6:07 | 18:16 | 18:43 | 12 h 9 min |
| 21 June | 5:10 | 5:42 | 20:29 | 21:01 | 14 h 47 min |
| 23 September | 6:26 | 6:52 | 19:00 | 19:26 | 12 h 8 min |
| 21 December | 6:46 | 7:16 | 16:48 | 17:17 | 9 h 32 min |

Civil twilight is the half hour or so before sunrise and after sunset when there is still enough light to shoot without flash. It is also the last useful light for walking down a trail: if you stay on a summit for sunset, you need a head torch and must know the descent well.

A real example. Three young people who reached the top of [Pizzo Carbonara](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/pizzo-carbonara-from-piano-battaglia/) lost the path in the dark on the way down, and Alpine Rescue teams brought them back. Sunset on the summit is beautiful, but it needs planning.

## What to photograph: subjects and places

### Woods and trees

The Madonie beech woods are the most sought-after subject in autumn. In the [Vallone Madonna degli Angeli](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/vallone-madonna-degli-angeli-and-the-abies-nebrodensis/), at Polizzi Generosa, beech and holm oak grow on opposite slopes: in autumn one turns yellow and the other stays green, and the last Madonie firs, *Abies nebrodensis*, grow there too. Above Castelbuono, from Piano Sempria, you reach the [giant hollies](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/bosco-di-castelbuono-giant-hollies/).

For woodland types, monumental trees and where to find them, there is the guide to [Madonie woods and beech forests](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/nature/beech-forests/).

### Snow and frost

After a snowfall, when the sky clears, Piano Battaglia changes face: frost-covered beeches, white plateaus, peaks against a blue sky. These are days to make the most of quickly, because sun and wind melt the frost in a few hours. Before going up, check the [roads](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/roads/) page: with snow the road may require chains.

### Hilltop villages and Etna

[Petralia Soprana](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/petralia-soprana/), at 1,147 metres, is the highest municipality in the Madonie: from its viewpoints, on clear days, you can see Etna and the Sicani mountains. [Gangi](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/gangi/) has its famous photo: the pyramid-shaped town with Etna behind, on the approach along the SS120. Geraci Siculo, Sclafani Bagni on its crag and San Mauro Castelverde above the gorges are the other villages to look at with a telephoto lens.

The best light on the village stone is the low light of morning and late afternoon. In Gangi the houses take on the colour of the sunset.

### Coast and gorges

From the [Rocca di Cefalù](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/the-rocca-di-cefalu-and-the-temple-of-diana/) you see the cathedral, the harbour and the beach from above. Watch the opening hours: last entry is two hours before closing, which in winter time is at 17:00. In the [Gole di Tiberio](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/gole-di-tiberio/), the canyon of the Pollina river at San Mauro Castelverde, it's best to shoot when the sun is not overhead, to avoid harsh contrast between rock and water.

### Flowers

In spring the plateaus fill with flowers. The 2026 Geopark Week programme included a late-May walk from Isnello to the slopes of Pizzo Dipilo to see the broom *Genista demarcoi* in bloom. During the [European Geoparks Week](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/events/european-geoparks-week-madonie/) in 2026 there were also guided visits to the Park's geosites.

## Night photography and the Milky Way

The place for stars is Isnello. The area of GAL Hassin and the church of the Annunziata is certified as a Starlight Stellar Park, and since 2015 the Comune has redone its street lighting, cutting light pollution by a factor of three. In its history page, GAL Hassin publishes a photo of the Milky Way over the village.

A few practical tips:

- **pick the night**: no Moon, or with the Moon already set;
- **get away from the lights**: the high plateaus are darker than the villages, but reaching them at night needs clear roads and care;
- **don't camp**: camping, bivouacking and fires are forbidden in the Park; for a night up high there are [mountain huts and places to stay](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/where-to-stay/);
- **wrap up**: even in August, up high, it's cold at night.

In summer GAL Hassin runs observation evenings at its telescopes and, in August, shooting star nights. Times and prices are in the guide to [stargazing in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/things-to-do/stargazing/).

## Wildlife, plants and trees: photographing without harm

The Park rules apply to photographers too:

- **don't disturb animals**: no approaching, shouting or sudden movements, especially when young are around. That's exactly what a telephoto lens is for;
- **stay on the trails**: no walking into private meadows or trampling flowers for a shot;
- **don't pick anything**: removing plants, flowers or parts of them is forbidden;
- **don't linger under big trees**: the Park authority warns that branches of monumental trees can fall even without wind, and during weather alerts it forbids going into woods near large trees;
- **don't climb over fences** to get closer to an edge or a tree.

## Drones in the Parco delle Madonie

We found no drone rules published by the Parco delle Madonie authority. Before taking off, do two things:

1. check on the **d-flight** platform, the ENAC and ENAV service, whether the area is a geographical zone with drone restrictions;
2. ask the **Park authority** in Petralia Sottana, especially if you want to fly in the A zones with the strictest protection.

In any case the ban on disturbing wildlife applies, and a noisy drone certainly disturbs it.

## Gear and safety

- **Light tripod**: for sunrise, sunset and night. For hiking, choose one that fits in your rucksack without weighing you down.
- **Head torch**: essential if you stay for sunset or photograph the stars.
- **Warm layers and gloves**: up high the temperature drops fast after sunset.
- **Water and a charged phone**: in the Park there are no fountains or services outside the villages, and in some areas there's no phone signal.

If your photo project starts from a trail, first read the guide to [hiking in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/things-to-do/hiking/) and the article on [mountain safety](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/magazine/cai-scale-trail-difficulty/).

## Frequently asked questions

### When is the best time to photograph the Madonie?

It depends on the subject. From October to the first half of November the high beech woods turn yellow and red. From December to March, after a snowfall, Piano Battaglia and frost-covered beeches give the strongest images. Between late May and June there are flowers and long days; in summer, on moonless nights, the Milky Way.

### Where can you photograph autumn colours in the Madonie?

In the beech woods above 1,500 metres: Piano Battaglia and Monte Mufara, the Pizzo Carbonara loop, Monte San Salvatore, Piano Pomo, the Vallone Madonna degli Angeli and Piano Zucchi. In the Vallone beech and holm oak grow on opposite slopes, so in autumn you get yellow on one side and green on the other in the same shot.

### Can you photograph the Milky Way in the Madonie?

The sky over Isnello is certified as a Starlight Stellar Park, and since 2015 the Comune has cut the village's light pollution by a factor of three. GAL Hassin even publishes a photo of the Milky Way over Isnello. Choose a moonless summer night and a plateau far from lights, remembering that camping and bivouacking are forbidden in the Park.

### Can you fly a drone in the Parco delle Madonie?

We found no drone rules published by the Park authority. Before flying, check on ENAC's d-flight platform whether the area is a geographical zone with restrictions, and ask the Park authority in Petralia Sottana, especially for the A zones with the strictest protection. In any case the Park forbids disturbing wildlife.

### Where can you photograph Etna from in the Madonie?

On clear days Etna can be seen to the east from the summit of Pizzo Carbonara, from the viewpoints of Petralia Soprana and on the approach to Gangi along the SS120, with the pyramid-shaped town in front of the volcano. Autumn and winter mornings, after a weather front has passed, have the cleanest air.

### What time does the sun set at Piano Battaglia?

With a clear horizon, sunset at Piano Battaglia ranges from about 16:48 at the winter solstice to 20:29 at the summer solstice; at the autumn equinox it is around 19:00. We calculated these times with the NOAA algorithm: the surrounding mountains bring the real sunset forward by a few minutes.
