### Polizzi Generosa, Piano Battaglia and Castelbuono

Leave Palermo by 8 am. Morning in Polizzi Generosa, midday on the Piano Battaglia plateau with a walk of your choice, afternoon at Castelbuono castle, back in time for dinner. About 250 km and 4 hours 10 minutes of driving in total.

- Palermo, Quattro Canti: Start. A19 towards Catania, exit Scillato, then SS643: 85 km, about 1 h 20.
- [Polizzi Generosa](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/polizzi-generosa/): Chiesa Madre with the Flemish triptych, viewpoints over the valley. A good hour.
- [Vallone Madonna degli Angeli and the Abies nebrodensis](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/vallone-madonna-degli-angeli-and-the-abies-nebrodensis/): Alternative to Pizzo Carbonara: it starts at Portella Colla, 5 km from Piano Battaglia on the SP54.
- Piano Battaglia: From Polizzi 35 km via Petralia Sottana and the SP54, about 50 min. A plateau at about 1,600 metres.
- [Pizzo Carbonara from Piano Battaglia](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/pizzo-carbonara-from-piano-battaglia/): Loop of about 7 km in 2 h 30, grade E. Only in settled weather.
- [Rifugio Giuliano Marini](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/where-to-stay/rifugio-giuliano-marini-petralia-sottana/): The refuge on the plateau, with a restaurant: the closest stop to the trail.
- [Castelbuono](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/castelbuono/): From Piano Battaglia 37 km via Piano Zucchi and Isnello, about 45 min. Ventimiglia castle and the old town.
- Back to Palermo: SS286 to the A20, then the A19: 90 km, about 1 h 15.

In one day from Palermo you can see the Madonie on a driving loop of about 250 km: the morning in Polizzi Generosa, midday on the Piano Battaglia plateau at about 1,600 metres, the afternoon at Castelbuono castle. You spend about 4 hours behind the wheel, stops excluded. The rest of the day goes to a hill town, the mountains and a castle.

## Who is this itinerary for?

For people who live in Palermo or are spending a few days there and want a day in the mountains without staying overnight. For anyone who has seen the city and wants a day out that isn't the beach.

You need a car. We haven't verified bus timetables between the Madonie towns, and we don't suggest a loop like this by public transport in a day.

If you want to walk more or see more than 3 places, one day is tight. Have a look at the [weekend in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/itineraries/weekend/) or [a week in the Madonie](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/itineraries/one-week/).

## When is the best time?

Spring and autumn are best: the air is clear up high, the roads are quiet and the beech woods are green or turning. Autumn colour around Piano Battaglia comes in October: where and when to see it is in our guide to the [beech woods in autumn](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/magazine/autumn-beech-woods-madonie/).

In summer, leave even earlier. Piano Battaglia stays cool, but the morning is the best time for Pizzo Carbonara.

Winter changes everything. On the SS643, SS120 and SS286 used on this loop you need snow chains on board or winter tyres: in winter 2025/2026 the ANAS order required them from 1 December to 31 March, and the exact stretches are on our [roads page](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/roads/). With snow, Pizzo Carbonara is no longer a day-trip trail: for a day in the snow, follow [the Madonie in winter](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/itineraries/winter/).

## How much driving, and on which roads?

We calculated distances and times on 19 October 2026 with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data, with no traffic and no stops. On mountain roads, add a few minutes.

| Leg | Roads | km | Driving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palermo → Polizzi Generosa | A19, exit Scillato, SS643 | 85 | 1 h 20 |
| Polizzi Generosa → Petralia Sottana | SS643, SS120 | 17 | 20 min |
| Petralia Sottana → Piano Battaglia | SP54 | 19 | 30 min |
| Piano Battaglia → Castelbuono | SP54 via Piano Zucchi, SP9 via Isnello | 37 | 45 min |
| Castelbuono → Palermo | SS286, A20, A19 | 90 | 1 h 15 |
| **Total** | | **248** | **4 h 10** |

Why not drive up straight from Polizzi? The SP119, the shortest road between Polizzi Generosa and Portella Colla, was closed by the mayor after a landslide in February 2026 (La Sicilia), and in June work had still not started (Madonie Press). Until it reopens you go via Petralia Sottana: about 18 km and 20 minutes more. Sat navs sometimes still suggest it. Don't follow them.

The loop also works in reverse. That makes sense in winter, when the castle museum in Castelbuono closes at 4.45 pm.

## Morning: Polizzi Generosa

From Palermo take the A19 towards Catania, exit at Scillato and climb 18 km on the SS643. Polizzi Generosa sits at 917 metres, looking over the Imera valley.

The main stop is the Chiesa Madre. Inside is a fifteenth-century Flemish triptych of the Mother of Wisdom, which the town's tourism site attributes to Rogier van der Weyden, and a silver tabernacle by Nibilio Gagini. Then walk up to the castle ruins and the viewpoints in the old town.

Before you leave, try sfoglio, a pie filled with fresh cheese made in Polizzi and the nearby towns. The village page is [Polizzi Generosa](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/polizzi-generosa/).

## Midday: Piano Battaglia

From Polizzi drive down the SS643 and the SS120 to Petralia Sottana, home of the Madonie Park authority, then up the SP54: 35 km, around 50 minutes. Piano Battaglia is a karst basin at about 1,600 metres below Monte Mufara. Before you go up, check the [Piano Battaglia forecast](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/weather/piano-battaglia/): fog and wind arrive fast up there.

Choose according to the weather and your legs:

- **Pizzo Carbonara loop**, the highest peak in the Madonie at 1,979 metres: about 7 km in 2 hours 30 minutes, grade E, no water along the way. Details on the [Pizzo Carbonara trail page](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/pizzo-carbonara-from-piano-battaglia/).
- **Vallone Madonna degli Angeli**, from Portella Colla, 5 km from the plateau on the SP54: the trail to the last *Abies nebrodensis* trees, fewer than thirty according to the counts. See the [Abies nebrodensis trail page](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/trails/vallone-madonna-degli-angeli-and-the-abies-nebrodensis/).
- **A walk on the plateau**, if the weather is unsure or you just want some fresh air.

For lunch, the [Rifugio Giuliano Marini](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/where-to-stay/rifugio-giuliano-marini-petralia-sottana/) on the plateau has a restaurant. We mention it because it is the closest to the start of the trail. If you do Pizzo Carbonara, a packed lunch saves time.

## Afternoon: Castelbuono

From Piano Battaglia head down towards Piano Zucchi and Isnello to Castelbuono: 37 km, about 45 minutes of bends.

The fixed point is the Ventimiglia castle, home of the Museo Civico. Inside is the Palatine Chapel of Saint Anne, with stucco work by Giuseppe and Giacomo Serpotta on a gold background.

Opening hours published by the Museo Civico, checked on 19 October 2026:

| Period | Opening |
|---|---|
| November-March | daily, 9.30 am-4.45 pm |
| April-October | daily, 9.30 am-1 pm and 3-6.30 pm |

The museum warns that hours may change: if you arrive late, call ahead. After the castle, walk around the small old town. For the story of manna, which is collected from ash trees here, read our guide to [Castelbuono manna](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/magazine/castelbuono-manna-ash-tree-crystal/). The village page is [Castelbuono](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/castelbuono/).

## The version from Cefalù

If you are staying in Cefalù, do a shorter loop: Cefalù, Castelbuono, Piano Battaglia, Isnello and back. That's about 107 km and 2 hours 20 minutes of driving.

| Leg | km | Driving |
|---|---|---|
| Cefalù → Castelbuono | 23 | 25 min |
| Castelbuono → Piano Battaglia | 36 | 50 min |
| Piano Battaglia → Isnello | 24 | 30 min |
| Isnello → Cefalù | 23 | 35 min |

You get more time for Pizzo Carbonara and you're back by the sea for sunset. Polizzi Generosa is left out: keep it for another time. If the beach-and-mountain combination is what you're after, there is a dedicated [sea and mountains](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/itineraries/sea-and-mountains/) itinerary.

## What if it rains?

In rain or fog, skip Pizzo Carbonara: on the plateau your landmarks disappear. Shorten the time up high and spend longer in the towns, where Castelbuono castle and the Chiesa Madre in Polizzi are under cover.

With a weather warning, check the regional Civil Protection bulletin and our [roads page](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/roads/) before you set off: landslides and closures do happen on mountain roads.

## Where to eat and sleep

Lunch is up high or a picnic. For a snack or dinner before driving back, see [where to eat in Castelbuono](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/castelbuono/where-to-eat/) and [where to eat in Polizzi Generosa](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/polizzi-generosa/where-to-eat/).

If you decide to stay a night, Castelbuono is the handiest base for the next day: see [where to stay in Castelbuono](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/villages/castelbuono/where-to-stay/).

## Practical tips

- Fill up before leaving the motorway. Distances between towns are short, driving times are not.
- Download an offline map: the phone signal comes and goes up high.
- Bring a jacket even in summer. At 1,600 metres it's cooler than in the city.
- For mountain emergencies call 112. Before walking, read our [mountain safety guide](https://www.lemadonie.it/en/magazine/cai-scale-trail-difficulty/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What can you see in the Madonie in one day?

A hill town, a plateau and a castle: Polizzi Generosa with its Chiesa Madre, Piano Battaglia with a walk of your choice, Castelbuono with the Ventimiglia castle. It's a loop of about 250 km from Palermo, with around 4 hours of driving.

### How far is Piano Battaglia from Palermo?

About 120 km and just under 2 hours via Petralia Sottana, according to our OSRM calculation on OpenStreetMap. The shortest route from Polizzi Generosa, the SP119, is closed by a landslide in 2026. In winter, check roads and chains first.

### Can you do it as a day trip in winter?

With open roads and winter tyres or chains on board, the day works. Swap Pizzo Carbonara for a day in the snow at Piano Battaglia and keep Castelbuono for the afternoon, remembering the museum closes at 4.45 pm.
